Play-Off Needed At
Final Round At Stow
Acres CC
Stow, Mass., - With heavy rain forecasted for the final
round of the 2010 PGA Junior Series event at Stow Acres Country Club, players
were extremely lucky when all they had to deal with was light rain and easy
scoring conditions.
The field featured over 90 juniors from nine different
states as well as Italy and Argentina.
The 54-hole event was not enough to crown a champion in the
Boys’ 16-18 Division. A hole-by-hole
play-off was needed between Jimmy Greg of Clifton Park,
N.Y., and Christopher Gentle of Lowell, Mass.
On the second play-off hole Gentle’s
par was good enough to win the play-off and the Division.
Greg turned in the round of the tournament to get into the
play-off with a 2-under-par 70 for a three day total of 226.
Gentle shot a 4-over-par 76 to also earn his spot in the
playoff. This is Gentle’s
first national win and was overjoyed to hear that he had earned an exemption
into the 35th Junior PGA Championship later this summer at Sycamore
Hills Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Colton Wiggins of Indiana, Pa., lead wire-to-wire to win the Boys’
13-15 Division. He shot a solid
2-over-par 74 for a three-day total of 224.
He was able to cruise to victory with a winning margin of five
strokes.
Wiggins was the 2009 PGA Junior Series Player of the Year
for the Boys’ 13-15 Division and this was his first win in 2010. He looks forward to next week at the PGA
Junior Series event at Penn
State University
where he plans to play up a division in the Boys’ 16-18 Division for the first
time.
Matthew Michaud of Hingham,
Mass., came in second place with
a three day total of 229 and improved on his score each of the three days. William Woods of East Sandwich, Mass.,
rounded out the top-3 with a three day total of 231.
Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I.,
cruised to her victory in the Girls’ 16-18 Division. She shot a 5-over-par 77 in the third round
for a three day total of 224.
She played consistent all week and clearly earned her
victory as she won by 13 strokes over Brooke Beegle
of Fortville, Ind.
Alexendria Lee of Windsor,
Conn., and Jordan Glatt
of Doylestown, Pa., tied for third place in the division.
In the final division of the day, Danielle Fuss came in
first place to win the Girls’ 13-15 Division with a three day total of
241. She was able to hold off Elizabeth DeVincentis of Durham,
Conn., by one stroke to win.
The two players battled all day going back and forth but
Fuss was able to stay strong in the lead and made the important putts down the
stretch to win.
Katherine Barrand of Beverly, Mass.,
came in third place with a three day total of 248.
The PGA Junior Series heads to Penn State University for its next stop on the 2010
schedule. The tournament will feature
over 160 juniors and will start on Monday July 19th.
