McDanel, Milholen Grab Opening Round Leads at Columbia Country Club

Blythewood, S.C. The first round of the 2014 PGA Junior Series included pristine weather conditions and an exceptional golf course, as players took advantage of the conditions.

Maddy McDanel of Pittsburgh, Pa., posted an opening-round 2-under-par 70, and owns a three-stroke lead heading into second round.

McDanel credited her strong play to her short game.

I feel really good about how I played today. I struck the ball well and my putting was exceptional, said McDanel. I really think thats what made me able to score as well as I did. I feel great about the rest of the week, but this is a three-day tournament so Im going to stay focused and make more putts.

Sarah Harrison of Martinez, Ga., and Rei Nakatani of Japan shot 73 and are tied for second.

Jennings Milholen of Pittsboro, N.C., took the early lead in the boys 15-18 division, posting a 71.

I feel like I played a consistent round. I made a few birdies and a few bogeys, but played about the same all day, said Milholen. I definitely struggled with the putter on the back, missing a few birdie putts inside of 10 feet and I feel like I left some shots out there. This golf course fits my eye and I feel like I can string together consistent golf these next 2 days.

Jonathan Rector of Hendersonville, N.C., is second after posting a 72. In total, there are 18 players within six shots of the lead with two rounds left to play.

The leader in the boys 12-14 division is Walker Jones of Sumter, S.C., who posted a round of 78.
